Well-known industry figurehead Rex Moss established Rimoptics in Australia from his South African base in 1981. The following year, with 15 years of optical industry experience to his name, Rex and his family migrated to Australia.
Since those early days, Rimoptics have achieved excellent growth for our clients and ourselves. In fact, as importers and distributors of spectacle frames, we currently service 93% of the optical industry client base. This positions Rimoptics as one of Australia's largest independent optical wholesalers.
Our growth in status within the industry can be attributed to the foresight of Rex and his young management team, which includes our current Managing Director, Alon Cohen. Alon joined Rimoptics in 1984 in a sales and marketing role. Geoff Mantell joined Rex and Alon in 1991 as National Sales Manager, at a time of accelerated growth in the business. Rohan Gibbon joined the group in 1996 to strengthen and consolidate our sales and marketing divisions.
Throughout the mid 80s to early 90s the management team recognised that the Australian eyewear industry landscape was changing. Consumers were becoming more fashion conscious and demand for affordable eyewear was on the increase. During this period, specialist agencies were sourced and acquired; these being Fendi, Laura Biagiotti and Emanuel Ungaro. Through these agencies we have developed strong ongoing business relationships with three of the largest optical manufacturers in the world; these being Luxottica, Visabilia and the DeRigo Group. In 2002 the group acquired the distribution rights for Persol sunglasses and the Genny agency. More recently it has obtained the exclusive distribution rights for Byblos, Kliik Denmark, You'S Eyeworks and the Jo Baxter collection. The Rimoptics Group continues to acquire the latest product ranges, reacting readily to the market's needs.
The on-going success of Rimoptics can be attributed to three key principles which our company abides by. Firstly, we focus on providing our client base with a superior range of products in tune with market demand. Secondly, we treat all our clients, regardless of size, in the highest professional manner. Finally, we maintain a company structure in which senior personnel are involved in a hands-on capacity on a day-to-day basis with a strong focus on customer service and satisfaction at all times.
In 2006 Rimoptics expanded their product range by acquiring and securing the distribution rights for the following agencies: Façonnable (France), Renato Balestra (Italy) and Dutz Eyewear (Holland). The group’s market share grew considerably, while turnover and profitability maintained steady upward growth. This occurred despite the rationalization of the retail industry namely Luxottica (OPSM) takeover of larger independent chain stores who previously accounted for approximately 200 outlets.
The Rimoptics group continues to prosper. We are continually exploring new growth and acquisition opportunities while steadily increasing our market share and building on our respected image in the market. With the fast changing pace of the industry. Rimoptics has again set the bench mark by bringing in a few, more highly sought after, brands from Europe such as Fysh (UK) and Stellini (Italy).
